Exciting news out of Sacramento! On August 30, the California Assembly passed SB 1449, which would reclassify possession of under an ounce of marijuana from a misdemeanor to a civil infraction. According to the California Assembly Clerk's office, the unofficial vote count was 43 in support to 33 in opposition. (read more)
The bill had previously passed the California Senate 21-13.
SB 1449 will now make its way to Gov. Schwarzenegger's desk for his signature or veto. Please call Gov. Schwarzenegger's office today and ask him to sign this sensible legislation into law. It's easy using our online call center, located at:

This important bill would prevent otherwise law abiding adults from being branded criminals for simply possessing a substance proven safer than alcohol. Please ask Gov. Schwarzenegger to sign this bill into law.
Also in Sacramento, all's still quiet on the bill that would require all medical marijuana growers, retailers, transporters, and wholesalers to obtain licenses from the state Board of Equalization. As you may recall, this is a gut and replace of SB 1131 and is currently in the Assembly Rules Committee. Over 450 Californians responded to MPP's alert and let their opinion be known. If you have not already done so, please contact your Assemblymember and ask him or her to oppose this measure,
which would add significant burdens without giving providers any new protections. Please use our online action center located at:

Finally, unfortunate news. On August 30, the California Assembly refused to pass SJR 14, a resolution that would have called for an end to federal interference in state medical marijuana laws, as well as the development of a comprehensive national policy to provide patients safe access to their medicine. The resolution needed a majority vote of 41 in favor, but fell short with 37 in favor, 29 opposed, and 12 not voting (read more).
Assemblymember Ammiano has resubmitted the resolution for reconsideration. Although the legislative session is scheduled to end at midnight tonight, the legislature may reconvene or extend it's session and all resolutions, as opposed to all bills, can still be voted on if the legislature returns. Please be on the look out for further updates.
Thank you all so much for your tireless efforts in helping reform marijuana policy in the Golden State.
Please call the Governor and urge him to sign SB 1449, if you haven't already done so.
